How to Flip on the RS3 Grand Exchange

~6 min read

Flipping is the art of buying an item low and selling it higher on the Grand Exchange (GE) — pocketing the difference. It is one of the safest ways to grow your gold in RuneScape 3, and you never have to leave the GE.

How the Grand Exchange works

Every account has eight GE slots. In each slot you can place a buy offer (the price you are willing to pay) or a sell offer (the price you want to receive). Offers fill when someone on the other side matches your price.

The one number that matters: margin after tax

RS3 charges a 2% sales tax when your item sells, so your real profit is a little less than the raw spread:

profit per item = sell price − buy price − (2% of sell price)

If the tax wipes out the spread, it is not a flip. We break the tax down fully in our GE tax guide.

Finding good flips

A good flip has three things:

  1. A healthy margin after tax — enough profit to be worth the slot.
  2. Volume (liquidity) — the item actually trades, so your offers fill in reasonable time.
  3. Reasonable stability — the price is not crashing while you hold it.
Watch your buy limits. Every item has a 4-hour buy limit — the maximum quantity you can purchase per slot in that window. High-value items often have tiny limits (sometimes just 1), which caps how much you can flip at once.

A simple flip, step by step

  1. Pick an item with a solid margin and steady volume.
  2. Place a buy offer at (or just above) the instant-sell price to get filled without overpaying.
  3. Once it buys, place a sell offer at (or just below) the instant-buy price.
  4. Collect your gold when it sells — then repeat.

Patience beats greed. Setting your offers a little inside the spread fills faster than trying to squeeze the last coin.

The risks

Prices move. An item can crash while you are holding it, or your sell can sit unfilled if demand dries up. Spread your gold across a few flips, do not dump your whole bank into one volatile item, and always verify the live price in-game before committing — market data can lag.

Do it faster with alerts

The hardest part of flipping is timing — knowing when an item crashes into buy range, spikes into sell range, or when your resting offer has likely filled. That is exactly what ZephFlip watches for you, so you are not glued to the GE screen.
